• After the liberation in 1945, tulips became a symbol of gratitude and freedom. As a token of appreciation for the efforts of Canadian troops in the liberation and for sheltering the royal family, the Netherlands has been gifting tens of thousands of tulip bulbs to Canada every year. This tradition continues at the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa.
